World’s Largest Biodiesel Plant Opens in Singapore

The plant, which is operated by Neste Oil, generates fuel from vegetable oils and waste animal fat from the food industry. Neste claims that fuel produced at the plant offers a 40% to 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuel-based diesel. While the Singapore plant is already open, it isn’t operating at full capacity quite yet — it will slowly ramp up, according to Neste. Singapore’s plant may not remain the world’s largest for long; Neste is planning a similarly-sized biodiesel plant in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. That plant will be completed in 2011.
